Hungaria Nostra (Latin for “Our Hungary”) works to preserve Hungarian history and culture. Founded in Southern California in 1998, the Hungaria Nostra Foundation of Los Angeles, Inc., (HNF) annually disburses between $5,000 and $15,000 in grants to one or more cultural or architectural preservation, restoration, or publishing projects. We have supported more than 20 projects, some of which you can read about on this website.
HNF also works to spur other organizations and individuals to consider financially supporting the preservation of Hungarian culture in Hungary and the Hungarian Diaspora.
Apply For a Grant
We are actively seeking grants applicants in a wide range of fields — from restoration of architectural and artistic works to the proliferation of Hungarian culture. (Please visit the Grants page to review the guidelines for submitting an application. Contact us with any questions.)
Sustaining Our Mission
While HNF has accomplished a great deal with limited resources, we need financial support to continue the work envisioned by our illustrious founder, art historian Dr. Esther Vécsey (1939-2021), whose vision guided selection of many of the excellent projects we have supported in the past. Please consider donating to the foundation. Hungaria Nostra of Los Angeles, Inc., has a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit designation, making all U.S. dollar contributions tax deductible.
Hungaria Nostra Supports Transylvania Cultural Project
Our most recent completed project is The Cultural Wheel in Medgyes, Transylvania. A celebration of the 85th anniversary of the Medgyes Unitarian Church, the project featured lectures, folk music teaching and concerts, photography and painting exhibits, a traditional furniture-painting workshop, and installation of a memorial plaque. (Learn about other sponsored projects on the Projects page.)
